Turn Up The Heat
Boost Your Tanning Potential

You have worked long and hard to establish a beautiful tan, but now you want more out of your tanning session. You've heard a lot of talk about tingle factors and hot action products, but you've been reluctant to turn up the heat in your tanning regime. Why not?

First things first, consult your tanning salon professional. More and more lotion manufacturers have added these products to their offerings, which provides you with more choices. If you have questions, ask! Your tanning salon professional should be able to explain how tingle and hot action products work and if you are the right candidate for those products.

What Is It?

Many lotion manufacturers are reluctant to disclose their secrets; however, a review of the labels show that nicotinate, capsaicin, capsicum, niacin, vitamins and certain spices like nutmeg are used to create the tingling or hot action effect.

Most lotion manufacturers recommend that you alternate between tingle and non-tingle lotions. In addition, the use of an after-tanning product may help you cool down after using a hot action or tingle product. And for those of you looking to keep your skin looking healthy and feeling supple, get into the habit of using an after shower moisturizer on a daily basis.

How They Work

Many tingle or hot action lotions state that the active ingredients stimulate microcirculation as a means to enhance the tanning process. Since microcirculation is defined as the flow of blood within the circulatory system of the body, tingle and hot ingredients are used to increase the blood flow of the smaller vessels closest to the surface of the skin.

Any substances that stimulate or irritate the skin can cause an increase in microcirculation in these same vessels. Other external factors can increase or decrease microcirculation such as friction (increase) and cold temperature (decrease).

In an indoor tanning salon, a common artificial source for microcirculation is the use of tingle or hot action products. If the tingle action takes place in the absence of light, the substance is known as simply an irritant or stimulant. If a substance is activated by light, it is classified as a photoirritant or photostimulant.

In most cases, the latter definitions are correct in the case of tingle or hot action lotions. The first time you apply a tingle or hot action product do so on a small area of your body to see if the reaction can be tolerated. If no problems occur, then you can use the product with confidence. If you have an uncomfortable reaction, the products might not be right for you. However, be sure to use common sense when applying the product. Avoid contact around the eyes and other sensitive areas of the body.
