Californians Need To Help Kill Tanning Bill
Posted on: 06/10/2004

A California bill that would make it illegal for anyone under 18 years old to tan without a prescription comes up for a committee vote next week, and California tanning salons are urging indoor tanners to join the fight to quash the legislation.

The state Assembly passed Assembly Bill 2193 on May 20. It must pass the Senate by Aug. 31 and be signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger by Sept. 30 to become law.

AB 2193 will be heard in the Senate Business and Professions Committee on June 14. Seven senators sit on the committee, which is known for killing bills that put additional regulations on businesses.

Communication from tanners themselves will be most impactful. They can visit www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html to verify if they live in one of the districts represented by a committee member.

* Sen. Samuel Aanestad, Senate District 4

* Sen. Michael Machado, Senate District 5

* Sen. Liz Figueroa, Senate District 10

* Sen. Gilbert Cedillo, Senate District 22

* Sen. Edward Vincent, Senate District 25

* Sen. Kevin Murray, Senate District 26

* Sen. James Brulte, Senate District 31

Tanning salon owners have been asked to draft a letter of opposition to the bill and have it available at the front counter. Tanners who live in these seven districts can sign the letter and leave it with a salon employee.
