A bill that would ban minors in California from using tanning salons without a doctor’s prescription is up for a vote again the state Legislature. Industry experts say the vote could come as soon as this week.
The Indoor Tanning Association urges tanners in the state to contact their senator and ask them to vote down the legislation when it comes up for a vote. Visit www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html and enter a ZIP code for the senator in a particular area.
Assembly Bill 2193 would make it illegal for anyone under 18 years old to tan without a doctor’s or surgeon’s prescription. The fine for each violation would be as much as $2,500 per day. If passed, the bill would make California the nation’s first state to enact such a ban. Under existing state law, 14- to 18-year-olds may tan indoors only with parental consent.
The state Assembly originally passed AB 2193 on May 20, but the Senate rejected the bill by a 19-9 vote July 2. At the time, the Senate agreed to reconsider the bill.
With that window of opportunity, bill sponsor Joe Nation began working with individual senators to change their “no” votes to “yes,” according to the ITA.
